Welcome to follow the Graphic Design History Timeline from 1950's to 1990's. The timeline represents five Design Styles that influenced during these years. 19 50 1950 SWISS STYLE The Swiss Style (Typographic Style or the International Style) emerged in 1920s but was further developed by the designers in Switzerland in the 1950s.Designs were clearly separated from fine art and used strict grid system and communicates facts. 19 50 1950 POP ART Pop Art started from New York in the mid 1950’s. At the same time it developed as well in United Kingdom but differently.It uses images from popular and mass culture. 19 60 1960 NEW WAVE AND PUNK In design New Wave is referred also as Swiss Punk Typography.It challenges the strict grid-based systems. The typography is in main role but it uses inconsistent letter spacing, varying type weights with single word and type set at non-right angles. 19 60 1960 PSYCHEDELIC MOVEMENT The Psychedelic Movement spread in the hippie environment in 1964.The psychedelic drug use (like LSD) encouraged to question boundaries and authority in art and used with bright and highly contrasting colours, spirals and concentric circles. 19 70 1970 GRAFFITY AND STREET ART From Philadelphia graffiti movement spread to New York City, reached it’s peak in the U.S. late 1970s and early 1980s and then spread to Europe.Graffiti is word-based art that is meant to represent a group or community. Street Art is then again based on imagery.
